Watching James Dean’s Rebel without a cause…

Sal Mineo, in this film, was playing a black man. When he is being chased by bullies, he shoots and wounds one of them. And when he is being chased by police, after this shooting, he takes a shot at the cops and misses.

But these were professional peace officers who were performing the public service they were hired to perform. So when chasing him, the hollered for him to stop and then fired twice into the air.

Today, they would have simply gunned him down.

Now, instead of having police who preserve the peace and protect the public, we have thugs in blue with badges who shoot first, ask no questions and too often gun down the unarmed. And thanks to mainstream media madness, nobody even seems to mind when police get away with murder. Police feel entitled to kill and the public allows it.

Sigh…

We have choices to make…

wordConservative and Liberal are adjectives.

Everyone is conservative about some things and liberal about others.

aca5

The words are not the problem or the issue. A primary issue is literacy. Literacy in America is in decline. Our secondary schools are failing and getting worse. Our president is flat stupid and proud of it.

The choices we face are not about right, left, liberal or conservative.

We can continue exporting terror, munitions and war.. with the corporate war parties…. or begin exporting technology, knowledge and peace with The Green Party and a Green New Deal for peace, people and planet.peacenotwar
Peace is not something the corporate parties are prepared to deliver.
“…We have an historic opportunity for a great global healing and renewal. If we will accept the challenge of nonviolent activism with faith, courage, and determination, we can bring this great vision of a world united in peace and harmony from a distant ideal into glowing reality.”
~Coretta Scott King
A Green New Deal … The term references the New Deal, the social and economic stimulus package undertaken by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in response to the Great Depression.

greennewdeal

“How can we create a sustainable green future that includes economic equity and social justice?”

“How can agendas for economic rights and environmental protection become more integrated and more successful?”
Seventy-five years after the start of the New Deal, and nearly 40 years after the first Earth Day, the need for basic change on behalf of social justice and ecology is clear.
But ideas are the easy part. In an era of massive environmental damage and vast economic inequality, we’ve got to organize.

I consider myself a conservative. I believe we can secure the peace and invest in people, a-sunflower-from-maggieinfrastructure and a healing planet.
This nation was created (in theory) based upon liberal traditions about protecting and enhancing the freedom of the individual and “liberals” feel that government is necessary to protect individuals from harm, but recognize that government can pose a threat.
And reality persists…
“Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race. Even before there were large numbers of Negroes on our shore, the scar of racial hatred had already disfigured colonial society. From the sixteenth century forward, blood flowed in battles over racial supremacy. We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its indigenous population. Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade. Indeed, even today we have not permitted ourselves to reject or feel remorse for this shameful episode. Our literature, our films, our drama, our folklore all exalt it. Our children are still taught to respect the violence which reduced a red-skinned people of an earlier culture into a few fragmented groups herded into impoverished reservations.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.
This is a time for new and revolutionary beginnings…
“Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it’s against the oppressor. Truth is on the side of the oppressed today, it’s against the oppressor. You don’t need anything else.”
― Malcolm X

Israeli Forces shot 2600 Palestinians

Israeli Forces shot 2600 Palestinians with live ammunition
as well as rubber Bullets in October: Red Crescent

hhhMa’an News Agency | – –

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot and wounded at least 2,617 Palestinians with live and rubber-coated steel bullets through October, the Palestinian Red Cross said Sunday, as clashes carried on into the new month.

A Red Crescent spokesperson told Ma’an that at least 760 Palestinians were shot with live rounds across the occupied Palestinian territory, while another 1,857 were hit with rubber-coated steel bullets.

educsHe said that a further 5,399 Palestinians were treated for excessive tear gas inhalation during the period, while another 246 were injured in other ways, including assault by Israeli soldiers and burns from tear gas canisters.

The spokesperson said that it brought the total injured during October to 8,262 Palestinians.

For most parts of the occupied Palestinian territory, October was also the deadliest month since the Second Intifada, with at least 69 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.

While 26 were shot dead during clashes, another 40 Palestinians were shot dead after Israel alleges they attempted or carried out attacks on Israelis.

While Palestinians agree that a number of Palestinians were shot dead while carrying out attacks — ultimately claiming 10 Israelis’ lives — footage and witness testimony have raised serious doubts over the Israeli army’s version of events in many of the other cases.

Moreover, Palestinian, Israeli and international rights groups have said that in the majority of cases, Israeli forces needlessly killed their alleged attackers when they posed no imminent threat, a practice Israeli group B’Tselem referred to as “extrajudicial executions.”

aca4Amnesty International said last week that Israeli force appeared “to have ripped up the rulebook and resorted to extreme and unlawful measures.”

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Raad al-Hussein said: “The high number of casualties, in particular those resulting from the use of live ammunition by Israeli security forces, raise concerns of excessive use of force, and violations of the right to life and security of the person.”

Clashes continue

The wave of unrest that swept the occupied Palestinian territory last month seemed unabated at the start of November, as fresh clashes left more Palestinians injured on Sunday.

349872CIn the central Gaza Strip, Israeli forces shot and injured two Palestinians with live rounds east of al-Buriej refugee camp, medics told Ma’an.

Ashraf al-Qidra, a spokesperson for Gaza’s Ministry of Health, said that both Palestinians were hit in their lower extremities and taken to Shuhada al-Aqsa Hospital in moderate condition.

Meanwhile in Hebron, Israeli forces shot and injured two Palestinians with live rounds in Sair village northeast of Hebron.

The Palestinian Authority Ministry of Health told Ma’an that one Palestinian was shot in his abdomen and the other in his thigh. They were both taken to Beit Jala governmental hospital for treatment and were in a stable condition.

The Red Crescent said that at least four were hit with rubber-coated steel bullets in clashes in Tulkarem, while further clashes were reported in a number of other flashpoints across the occupied West Bank.

israelA Palestinian was also shot dead by Israeli forces in the village of Beit Einun just east of Hebron in the first death this month.

The Israeli army said he attempted to stab a soldier, although they also said it took place during clashes inside the village. No Israelis were injured during the incident.

United Notions….

As the United Nations debated America’s record on race
Roger David Hardesty noted

This report gives Portland’s Human Rights Commission cover to dismantle their Police Community Relations Committee, which has been operating as a front for a police agenda while racial profiling continues unabated here. No improvements to data collection; many of the Chief’s egregious polices appear as if from this police-centric body, and make a sham out of claims that public input has been accommodated. The United Nations calls for specific, remedial action, not consensus building.”

aca4U.S. Record on Racial Discrimination is on the Whole World’s Agenda

There are solutions:  examples of “directed activity” are in the ACLU’s shadow report. It is completely legitimate to establish benchmarks, and pursue a directed course of action to establish human rights. This from a link, models the kind of work the UN expects in the actual pursuit of Eliminating All Forms of Racial Discrimination.http://www1.umn.edu/humanrts/CERDConcludingComments2008.pdf

educsIn Portland, even with prodding from the DOJ, it’s still taking three years to release police ‘analysis’ of stop data. When they ran into huge problems of cops not reporting, they simply dropped that 6-month period in their analysis. When contemplating data collection in a survey study recently, City Hall and PPB balked at releasing source data to the public who paid for it. If you see an overall problem with police policing themselves, you’ll understand a disinterested group needs to step in, understand from the DoJ what data is required to make a case of racial profiling, design data acquisition plans & analysis methodologies. BTW: Chief Reese already contracts with PSU, and then hired kids out of the program: the CJPRI has been compromised.
Here’s a Consult Hardesty blog post, sorta on point:

When cops want City Hall to approve of some shenanigans, we often see the Chief’s request portrayed as if it arises from our Human Rights Commission through a subcommittee that Roger David now styles the ‘Police Community’ Relations subcommittee.
  • Flanagan Tim Disparagement and dismissal of the UN is driven by the corporate-owned press. The United Nations is trying to do a difficult job, but the corporate cons in America use their veto power to prevent progress. Besides using a veto to invalidate unanimous decisions at the UN, the USA also refuses to pay their share. If corporate America would not stand against them, the UN could get more done.

heartlessThe only entity “threatened” by the U.N. are members of the Fortune 500. The UN has been taking them to task for profiteering and corruption.
I think this is useful.

But the corporate elites do not…
so, they use their media resources
(ALL of the wire services) to attack the United Nations in the same way they have a

peacesignportlandBack in the day… the UN once was dominated by America. But this is no longer the case. Now the U.N. is struggling to fight against corporate hegemony, but with a dwindling budget and deep pocket corporations (and the US Government) challenging them at every turn.

Unions and the UN are on your side.

Freedom of Speech Under Attack on Campus!

He should encourage the students to

alternative opinions and counter
them with
effective rhetoric when they may disagree, using

This seems counterproductive.

In examining his arguments and sources,
it appears that his classmates could easily
have countered his idea’s and challenged his

and the discussion cannot occur.

The student’s note to his professor…

‘Hi Pancho,

First, allow me to say that I don’t believe that I’m sexist, but even if I am, that doesn’t mean I’m wrong about rape culture. Much as Aristotle made the mistake of believing that some people were born to be slaves yet crafted much of ancient philosophy, I think it is possible for a person to hold incorrect views and still have a valid argument. I don’t care what I’m labeled as being as long as truth has its day. I was raised by a single mother and my two sisters and was always taught about how powerful and passionate women could be by their examples. I do not believe I am a sexist, but I do place reason above emotion.

a-sunflower-from-maggieI just wanted to point you towards my sources for my argument on Wednesday (and there are many sources beyond these). You say that all arguments must have textual evidence. This is my textual evidence. It is not based on opinions. It is based on data and hard facts. You said to me that it’s impossible to be objective. I think when it comes to data and numbers, it must be possible to be objective. We do not serve actual rape victims by over inflating the numbers on rape.

“In the last few years, there has been an unfortunate trend towards blaming “rape culture” for the extensive problem of sexual violence on campuses. While it is helpful to point out the systemic barriers to addressing the problem, it is important to not lose sight of a simple fact: Rape is caused not by cultural factors but by the conscious decisions, of a small percentage of the community, to commit a violent crime,”
aca5The argument that our culture propagates and permits rape is simply unfounded. The total population of the U.S. has grown consistently over the past century, yet as our population (and thus, our culture) has grown, rates of rape have fallen. We don’t live in a rape culture which propagates the rape of women.

Blithely dismissing this student from class is wrong
and I hope the professor reconsiders.
Teachiing and
Learning are broad territory and these endeavors require
courage, truth and vision.   When teachers are afraid to
teach and students are conditioned not to express opinions…
this fear-mongering is destroying institutional foundations.
The board and/or faculty should intervene.  We need transparency
and truth to survive as educators and students.

wordA Reed College professor ignited controversy earlier this week when he took the unprecedented step of banning a student from class discussions after receiving complaints that his outspoken opinions about rape were making others in the class uncomfortable.

As reported by BuzzFeed News, freshman Jeremiah True was informed via email on March 14 by his professor, Pancho Savery, that he would not longer be allowed to participate in the discussion portion of Savery’s Humanities 110 class.“Please know that this was a difficult decision for me to make and one that I have never made before; nevertheless, in light of the serious stress you have caused your classmates, I feel that I have no other choice,” BuzzFeed reports that Savery wrote in the email.

courage5Complaints centered on True’s repeated disagreements with his classmates about the accuracy of statistics regarding the number of women who are raped in college, as well as the existence of “rape culture.”

According to BuzzFeed, Savery’s email said that there were a number of sexual assault survivors in the class, and True’s opinions were making many of them feel unsafe and uncomfortable.

Many students at Reed have expressed approval of Savory’s decision, but he has also faced criticism, especially from outside of the campus. A petition true filed on change.org to allow him back into the discussion has generated more than 900 signatures.

https://www.change.org/p/reed-college-restore-jeremiah-josias-luther-george-true-to-his-humanities-110-conference-2

fearThe controversy comes in the midst of an ongoing national debate about the issues of rape and sexual violence on college campuses. Over 90 colleges are under federal investigation due to their alleged failure to appropriately handle cases of sexual violence against students.

Reed is not one of them, but its policies have nonetheless been the subject of intense scrutiny and criticism in recent years.
A 2014 report by The Washington Post showed that Reed had the third highest rate of reported sexual assault in the nation
in 2012.

True will still be allowed to complete the class—the ban only applied to the discussion portion—but he says he intends fight to bring attention to his situation. “I simply questioned the statistics,” he said. “I understand [Savery] has to take care of his students, but I have to take care of my education.”

bigbrotherBuzzFeed describes True this way:

“True, whose Facebook page says
he studies ‘How to Annoy People’ at
Reed, takes pride in challenging his
classmates’ opinions.

‘I know many people aren’t comfortable
with taking the stances I do, but I’m not
a sheep,’ he said.”

False Choices

a-sunflower-from-maggieConservatives vs Liberals
is a Corporate Con Game…

False Choices; Logical Fallacies.

We are both liberal and conservative…

We want to conserve what we value
(the environment, U.S. Constitution,
the Bill of Rights, Civil Rights, Human
Rights, Peace, Justice and Freedom)
and we need proactive civic-engagement
with the American liberal and progressive agenda:

franklin-d-roosevelt-and-wife

With Apologies
to Franklin
Delano Roosevelt
And his wife
Eleanor Anna Roosevelt

All we really want is:

1. The right to employment.

This would create economic policies encouraging full employment and removing corporate incentives for moving profits overseas.

livingwage2. The right to a living wage.

This would reduce the stresses and inequities inherent in hugely disproportionate wages: (1% vs. the 99% } Today if we had living wage laws indexed to the cost of living, the hourly minimum wage would be $22 an hour or more.

A living wage or salary is sufficient to keep a family above the poverty line. $15/hr is progress.

farmers
3. The right of farmers to adequate remuneration.

Legislation and policies must allow family farmers a conspicuous advantage over agribusiness. Agribusinesses must be required to pay their share.

4. The right of businesses, large and small, to fair compensation.

Instead of facing entrenched corporate monopolies, we need equity. Corporations are not people, they are legal myths which exist only according to rights guaranteed by their charters. We need updated and strengthened anti-trust laws to break up monopolies, reduce mega-mergers and encourage fair competition Large corporations can survive and prosper without taxpayer bailouts or corporate welfare.

housing3912262521_873ff9f026
5. Housing: well-built low-income housing.

There is no excuse for homelessness in the richest and most powerful nation on earth. I don’t buy it and neither should anyone else. So-called trickle-down economics don’t work. Americans have been tricked and trickled on long enough. Now we need accountability.

6. Healthcare as a Constitutional Right.

avermont12_2
The only solution for our health-care delivery problems is single-payer, non-profit health care. We have to take the insurance cartels off the table. Let them eat cake, and invest somewhere other than betting against the health of everyday people in America. Universal, non-profit health care is a global solution… opposed only by fascists, tyrants, monarchies and corporate fat-cats in the good ol’ U.S.A.

7. A strong social safety net is just common sense.

In the richest and most powerful nation on earth, we cannot afford not to take care of our children, the elderly, and the sick and abused. We must find the courage to protect the most vulnerable members of our nation and communities. Guaranteed retirement pensions will stop efforts to privatize Social Security). Unemployment insurance, disability insurance, and the other programs that work must be preserved.

educs
8. Universal Education through four years of college at any state school.

We need to repair our schools by putting teachers back in charge. Educational professionals, not congress, business, or corporate hacks should be running our schools. Education should be free and compulsory for primary and secondary levels and free for those who choose to undertake the first four years of undergraduate school. The GI Bill proved this works.

9. An End to Capital Punishment and a restoration of the rule of law.

mt_abolition_coalition1No more killing prisoners, checking our library cards, spying on our computer transactions or starting extra-constitutional corporate wars
of choice through destabilization, attack, invasion, occupation and exploitation of sovereign nations and their people. To say nothing about rendering for torture, rape and murder. These crimes must end.

10. We must secure the peace, seek justice, reduce munitions, and preserve freedom while restoring civil rights at home, and international collaboration abroad. We can restore infrastructure, revitalize our people and build bridges to a sustainable future.

Si, se puede.
